Who benefits most of most of the self help books, the author or the reader?

BOTH I would say. At some stage the Author in their life (if not born with this gift which I doubt), has had to come to terms with altering their own lives in a great way. If not then they were probably born with a deep understanding of compassion, and then went onto to study this subject in a very detailed way to be able to write the book.
The only ones who do not benefit are those readers that do not help themselves. You can take a horse to the water but you can’t make him drink. But generally I would say that equally both the author and the reader benefit from such knowledge.

Readers. The author has the satisfaction of knowing they helped someone, but it’s not their life that’s changing (hopefully for the better) it’s the readers.

that all depends on quality… I would assume most authors gain something because I would assume most of those books are simply not real enough to be anything more than a sell out

Perhaps neither and the publisher may be getting away with the most!!

I think, it depends on the wisdom and the ability of the reader, because author gets fix benefits from the publisher.

if the book is good, everybody; if not, it’s a pity of all the trees cut down to make paper from them

Man i am thinking this way too. Sometimes i think the writer is revealing things that may be the engine of the car, nice to hear someone relate, other times i feel you are a chess piece as soon as you read it, you are a part of the authors goals and not your own, could depend on the aurthor if he is not successful except for the book then i wonder.
